Inner Critic Voice Audit
That harsh voice about money might not be yours at all. Let's find out whose it is.
Step 1 of 5
Whose voice is running your money decisions?
For years you may have assumed your inner critic was simply what responsible adulthood sounds like. Often it isn't. We'll take one harsh line through five steps — capture it, trace where it came from, understand what it was protecting, and write something truer to put in its place. Five minutes, and it stays entirely on your screen.
Step 01 — Capture
Write the harshest thing your money-critic says.
Don't soften it or edit it. Capture the exact phrase, in the voice you actually hear.
When does it show up loudest?
Step 02 — Source
Whose voice does this actually sound like?
Read your phrase back. Often the voice isn't yours at all — it's an internalised version of someone else's fear, judgement or scarcity. Who does it belong to?
If you can name them, who is it?
Step 03 — Purpose
What was this voice trying to protect you from?
Most harsh inner voices formed to keep you safe. This one once made sense in some context. Name what it was guarding against — then ask, gently, whether that threat still exists in your life today.
Is that threat still true today?
Step 04 — Defusion
Put a little space between you and the voice.
You're not the thought. You're the person noticing the thought. The phrasing shift is small; the effect is large.
"…"
becomes —
"I'm noticing the thought that …"
Saying it this way names it as conditioning — not truth, not you. That separation is what restores your freedom to choose.
Step 05 — Choose
Now write the voice you'd actually use with someone you love.
Take the harsh line and answer it as you would answer a dear friend who said it about themselves. Honest, warm, true. This becomes your new internal script.
Your Inner Critic Audit
The voice isn't yours.
The voice you carried
"…"
What it was really doing
…
The voice you're choosing instead
"…"
Each time you catch the old voice and consciously choose this one, you rewire the pattern a little further. Awareness, naming, separation, choice — that is how it shifts.
