Values Clarification Framework™
Most people, when asked to name their values, produce a list that sounds like a job application. Family. Health. Integrity. Abstract enough to mean everything and therefore nothing.
This exercise takes you from recognition to definition to alignment in four stages. By the end, you will have a personal decision filter you can apply to any financial choice.
Stage 1
Broad Selection
Select every value that resonates with you. No limit. No pressure to narrow yet. The purpose is recognition, not ranking.
Stage 2
Distillation
Reduce to your top five to seven values. The reduction is the work. What survives when everything is competing? For each, write what this value means to you, in your own words. The personal definition is more important than the selection.
Stage 3
Values-Spending Alignment
Return to your spending from the past month. For each of your values, answer honestly: is your money serving this, or starving it? The gap between your values and your spending is the single most productive point of inquiry in the methodology.
Stage 4
Your Personal Decision Filter
Distil your values into a single question you can apply to any financial decision. It should name your values and distinguish between what you have chosen and what you have not.
Your values are:
Example: "Does this serve my freedom, my connection, and my growth — or is it serving something I have not chosen?"
Your values profile
What You Actually Value
These are the values that survived the distillation. Not aspirational. Yours.
